Tash & Bryan in Maui!

Aspen and I wanted to do some photos for our good looking and very awesome friends, Tash and Bryan, while we were all in Maui this past November. We decided to call them "Love In Between" because they are not married or engaged but wanted photos anyway!

In an effort to do something other than just beach photos, we drove out to a dusty side road we had stumbled upon earlier in our vacation. It was crazy, dry and dusty and we took full advantage by driving the car through the dust to stir it up and then shooting through it. Then we headed to the beach to rinse off and took some more awesome photos! Please contact us if you are getting married in Maui. We know all the good spots :)

Working at the Beauty Parlour is not only a great opportunity to finally learn how to manage my unruly mane, but it has also yielded some surprising and welcome new friendships, one of which is my new boss Des. I met Des during my interview and knew immediately that the Parlour was going to be my home for a long, long time.

We welcomed baby Marigold 9 weeks ago as the newest member of the Beauty Parlour family (whew, not the rookie for very long, was I?) and I got the incredible chance to photograph her this weekend. Big blue eyes and a hilarious grin with dimples that are just starting to emerge, I count myself lucky that she is testing them out on me.

Here are a couple I promised to get out into the world for family, friends, and customers alike.

Caught the last of the nice fall weather to do some engagement photos with Patricia and Niko. Patricia loves soft, pink, buttery light and wanted to have photos that looked like fall in Canada. Done! Aspen and I had to do a bit of scouting but we found some pretty spots where the leaves were still orange and the light was magical. We had an awesome time connecting with this couple and love their photos, we can't wait to photograph their wedding next year!

Heather and Matt

Anyone who works or has worked at MAC can attest to the strong community of talented and dynamic women that make up the employees of the company. Each person that I have worked with at that company has left an impression, or a mark on me in some way. Heather, or 'Heath' as most of us call her, is one of those women.

Heather and Matt's wedding charmed me in a few ways. The styling was very traditional, and family focused, which I loved, and much attention was placed on the comforts of all before the bride and groom. Three generations of women have now been married in that church, and standing watch (or keeping time) is the clock on the back wall so they always know exactly what time it was when they walked down the aisle.

The girls prepared for the day at Heather's house. Listening to music and styling themselves perfectly, the theme of the morning was pastries and Stepbrothers. Penny spent the morning with the guys tromping around the downtown farmer's market, a new favorite spot to shoot anything really.

The ceremony proceeded as all ceremonies do, but the expressions and smiles exchanged between the wedding party made me laugh out loud (although not in the church because that would be bad).

The reception was held at the lovely Oasis Conference Center. A pretty event center with a fabulous garden and a great ambiance. The candelabras and pink accents finished an amazing room like the icing on the cake.

I want to say thanks again for choosing us. Not because we are friends, but because you loved our work and what we could do for you. It was a privilege and an honor to be there on such a special occasion. Now for the photos!!

It's always a sticky situation you find yourself in when a friend gets married. Part of you wants to be just a participant, a reveler of the day, while the professional in you is aching to have control. Control over the light, the styling, the composition, the mood of the pictures... it is such a fight within to figure out what is best.

For my best friend Kristin's wedding, I shot the whole thing with Penny and had to shoot through tears of joy. It was so special to be there, and I'm proud of the pictures, and glad of the time we spent together. However it's twice as exhausting to shoot your friends when you're emotionally involved because you have to set aside your own feelings to be as objective as possible. For Michelle's wedding, I was strong, mostly because she already had another photog in her pocket so I felt she was in good hands. But Tiffany's wedding was a serious struggle. Mostly because I knew she was in a tight spot and needed someone, but also because I love her and wanted to be a part of the whole thing, not just an observer, but an active participant.

The great start to the day was the fact the girls came to my place so I could do their make up, so we drank sparkling wine, listen to Edward Sharpe, and wound ourselves up for the day. I helped Penny shoot the formals, and then I took a few moments to sit back and take it all in during the ceremony. I shot when I felt like it, and sat back when I didn't. I'm glad it was me (and Penny, Penny mostly...) but mostly I'm just glad the light was good, the air was sweet, and good friends were wed on a happy autumn eve. I love my girls and we danced until the wee hours when we could see our breath and the wine had seeped into our bones in blissful warmth.

We shot mostly natural light, with some flash interspersed throughout, but the sun kept going in and out of the clouds so we used what we had which was pretty good.

These are just the teasers, with more good things to come.

The whole thing was out at Tiffany's aunt's farm, whom I adore. She had the greatest acreage I've seen in a while, and these charming men named Kiwi and Pickman were nice accessories.

All Tiffany has ever wanted is to be a princess, and she finally got to be one for a day.

I love this shot of Penny, it shows what she will do for the love of the picture. She had a busted toe when she climbed up there, but you'd never know.

Nikki and Owen teasers!!

Whenever we tell someone we shot a wedding in Hanna, Alberta the response is always the same. "You know that's where Nickelback is from, right?" Yes we know. Whether you are a Nickelback fan or not, Hanna has a bit more to offer than just rock bands. Although Penny and I are a bit biased since when we arrived there was a parade. Oh you know, no big deal.

Nikki and Owen brought us into their idyllic little town and shared a few hidden gems with us. My favorite place hands down is the decrepit and crumbling roundhouse, which is an old train repair building that is just aching to be restored. If you fix it, I will live in it. Just sayin'. Other memorable haunts are the Hanna Doll Museum which was creepy and yet sweet all at the same time. Only if you focus on the fact that they were all loved, and maybe don't focus on the ones missing eyes. *shudder*.

Not only did we have a fantastic time shooting with Nikki and Owen and their fabulous wedding party, but the trip also gave me a chance to take Penny into Drumheller - one of my most favorite Alberta attractions. We visited the hoodoos, ate ice cream, and generally got lost. Oh, we also stopped at the Last Chance Saloon, an antique selling barn in the middle of nowhere, and the Sun Valley farm where we bought tomatoes and broccoli.

Stephanie and Brett Teasers!

One of my favorite emails I've ever received was the one from Stephanie telling me that neither her nor her fiance walk slowly through fields looking longingly at one another. Nor do they cuddle in sketchy back alleys or hold hands in wide stances against graffiti. The email made me laugh so hard I almost peed my pants. Now I'm a romantic, and so is Penny, so I'm not dissing the grass, brick, or the U of A, but occasionally a client breaks the mold and we come up with some funky ideas to make them comfortable and to make their personalities shine. For their engagement shoot we took them to an arcade where we made them play skeetball and other various games. Talk about a hard life! So we knew when their wedding rolled around that we would have fun. However, no one really understood HOW MUCH FUN we would end up having. Needless to say, I am bringing balloons, a bike, and bubbles to every wedding from now on. Here's a few fun photos to make you excited to see the rest.

PS Thanks to our friend Nelle for lending us the awesome red bike. Red bike made many boyfriends that day.

Ashton and Tyler

It's funny how after each wedding Penny and I feel a mix of exhaustion coupled with the anticipation of the photo download. Sunday is sacred for me, especially after a wedding. I wake up, my husband makes me coconut pancakes (our post-wedding breakfast arrangement), and then I get to look at the magical whirlwind that was the day before.

There are so many great things I can say about Ashton and Tyler's wedding. The drive out to the site was picturesque and peaceful. The property on all accounts was idyllic and dewy, and the tent let in beautiful, buttery light that set the tone for the whole day. We have to say thanks to them for so many things, but the thing I will say thanks the most for is for climbing into the spider infested decrepit truck, even though the photos didn't work out. You are both champions, just so you know. Congrats to you both, and thanks for having us!

And the award goes to Ashton for the most unconventional shoes.... Zombies??? Awesome.

I've been so excited to post these photos that I could barely wait until I showed the bride! This wedding was charming for so many reasons. From the lovely Nicola Gavins having a hand in everything from the make-up to the decorations, the dynamic duo of Nikki and Tricia ensured an amazing atmosphere and a delightful palette to the day. Kelly's charming expressions and Tricia's elegant poise made this shoot a little too easy, although I'm definitely NOT complaining. And they are available to plan your next wedding, should you want the help! Thanks to Flur on 124st for the flowers, and Anthropologie's Beholden for the wedding dress.... plus the band is Gypsy Jive, who's fiddler Cam also played me down the aisle. What a small, charming world.

I first got to know Heather (or Heath, as many call her) when I began at MAC a few years back. Stunning, delicate, and absolutely hilarious, Heath is a charming girl who models and quotes Stepbrothers all in one go. When Heath approached me to shoot for her wedding, Penny and I were both ecstatic for the opportunity. Matt is scarcely less attractive with his mild personality and everyman skills. He is a gentleman who can build things. What better combo can you have? The pair of them are enchanting, and their wedding was a classy statement. A perfect reflection of themselves of course. Here are a few teasers to whet your appetite for the good things to come!

Tricia and Kelly Teasers!!

This is the first installment of our teasers, which I think is great because people are so stoked to see their photos and they have to wait so long the hype kind of dies down... SO check out Tricia and Kelly, the wedding I just shot on Saturday! Obviously we have had some lovely weddings in the past couple of weeks so we will be posting some teasers of those as well in the next couple of days. In the meantime, grab a cup of tea and relish in my quick selection of a couple formals.

The calligraphy on the Thank You tag is done by the lovely Justine Ma, who has started her own company called Paper Hearts Studio! You should support local artists, especially when they are so charming and eloquent as my beautiful friend.

The floral arrangements were done by the amazing Flur on 124 street. The imagination and delicate palette they put together deserves high praise indeed.

This worked out better than I had even thought. I had no ideas when it comes to editing these. I can't actually think of any way to make them better... Although I'm sure Penny will have some ideas. She is the master when it comes to editing!

I borrowed this idea from Justine's friend Kelsie who is also an amazing photographer. The cherries were divine and tasted great as well!

These have just a tiny bit of fill on them with an umbrella and a light at 1/4... but it makes them pop ever so slightly.

I'm saving the best bike photos for the actual album, but Kelly got a hold of a two-person cruiser. Can props get any better??

Sonu and Christina

Penny and I had been dying to shoot an Indian wedding. They're colorful, dynamic, and it seems like everyone is dancing ALL THE TIME. When Christina and Sonu approached us about shooting their wedding, we practically jump in their laps to get them to choose us. We instantly liked their mild and sunny dispositions, and it made their wedding day a dream ( albeit a loooonnnggg dream... have you ever been to an Indian wedding??) On every level we loved it, and I hope it shows in the photos.

The photo below was when my flash didn't go off, but I love it for some reason. A technically not-good picture, but it still resonates for me personally.

The men and their very best Bollywood hands.

2 ceremonies, both at the River Cree which was tricky to light. No white walls, sculpted ceiling, huge room, dimly lit and no windows. A challenge, but a good one.

I was enthused about my staged picnic to say the least... however what you don't see are the HUNDREDS of spiders that spent the afternoon with us. Months later I have finally removed the props from the car, fairly certain the remaining spiders are dead.

I love Christina's face in this one. "You dip my bracelets in sacred milk and then I must put them on? Sure, why not..."

In Sonu's family's hotel room all of his aunties sung teasing songs. My favorite was his gung-ho auntie who used the tv stand as a drum!

Nik and Renee Wedding

So getting ready photos are not always where Penny and I first find our inspiration, but after watching an online tutorial, we both found new love for the peaceful moments and ability to wrangle light in the way we want. I was also the make-up artist for Renee, so we had special privileges in where we set our subject. Renee is quirky, beautiful, and fun, and we felt so close to her by the time the wedding rolled around that it was our privilege to be there, and we felt honored.

Looking below, isn't she lovely?

Renee's birth mother was there to support her on her amazing Jamaica Wedding Adventure, and the hilarity that radiates from these two is palpable in their pictures.

I told Renee I would do my very best to make her a "Vogue" bride, and this was my first attempt...

Pre-wedding dance party. I will explain "daggering" another time, perhaps.

I loved this tie!! Great choice Nik. Double Windsor too, impressive....

I love the second photo above where you can see Nik's reflection. A little disjointed, and very out of character for Penny and I, but I love it for some reason nonetheless.

It would take a lot to explain the editing process on the photos below, but when Penny showed them to me, all I could do was, "oooooooo......"

So many happy tears, I totally pegged Nik as the cryer, but they tried to outdo one another, I think. I shed a few tears, I was so happy.

Often with outdoor weddings side-lit contrasty shots can be a challenge, but we had such a great time and the cross process helped to soften the harsh light. Plus people get squinty. Just so you know.

Okay! So I'm pretty proud of these. I'm not usually an effect-fan, I more like to roll with the natural, but I love how these turned out.

This was an amazing resort. We all stayed in these villas featured behind Nik and Renee, and they were all sorts of pastel, easter egg colors. I loved it!

Nice different angle thanks to Penny. We're trying to change up our composition a bit to create more variety in our portfolio.

Everyone who worked on the resort sang and smiled while they worked. I don't think it was forced, people were genuinely happy. Although if I lived in Jamaica, I don't think I would mind cleaning bathrooms if I could swim in that ocean everyday.

So much color, there weren't many opportunities for black and whites, but this one shot of Penny's made me swoon a touch.

BEST CAKE EPISODE EVER

Nik stepped on Renee's dress and ripped it. I think we all gasped collectively, but it was alright in the end.

And now begins the sexy dance party!

Thanks again Nik and Renee, seriously. When we told our friends we were going to Jamaica, everyone whistled and expressed little snippets of envy. We worked super hard, I think I almost kicked that guy driving the cart because of his slow-mo driving skills, and the trek through the mud was unforgettably terrifying if either of you had slipped. Our cliff hiking, sweat inducing, photo-excursion was not for the faint of heart, but I loved every single moment of it and so did Penny. We were lucky to go with you, but it was meant to be, I honestly believe that. I have never felt so blessed and tired and creative all at the same time. Thanks guys, we love you!

Christine and Sonu are our first official Indian wedding, and we are so stoked!!! May can't come fast enough, not only for the obvious reasons, but also because we kick off the Edmonton wedding season with the riotous color event that is Sonu and Christine's wedding. This mild and sweet couple is going to blow us away on their wedding day, I'm certain of it! The photos are simple, done in the studio, which might create a nice dichotomy against their amazing colorful wedding photos to come!!! Check back in June for their wedding!

WellI'm not sure if you can guess how cold it was this day but it was pretty darn cold! Jamey and Jon were awesome. They brought their skates and circled us and our cameras amidst "do not skate" signage that we promptly ignored. I loved the casual nature of this shoot. I hope we captured somewhat of the relaxed and easygoing nature these two possess. I feel like engagement photos are a great complement to wedding photos which are by nature really dressy and exciting, while engagement photos should capture some essence of the quiet space between people.

This one is great because they were so so cold so they warmed eachother's ears. How sweet!

Jamaica!

Sneak peek from Nik and Renee's amazing wedding in Jamaica.......

I like to think I have no words to describe the divinely beautiful and luscious adventure that was Nik and Renee's wedding, but I will certainly try my best in any case. The photo above was a sweaty, adrenaline-pumping event that almost didn't happen, since many of you know sunsets in tropical places are quick and dynamic. The huge expanse of the resort coupled with what we affectionately call "Jamaica time" -as in the front staff were so slow getting a cart that Nik ended up carrying my power pack through a muddy, tree-lined dirt path to reach our perfect photo destination. Also, these rocks are sharp! Not to mention electrical equipment that has spent its lifetime in dry Edmonton is not happy in humid Jamaica. Not HAPPY AT ALL. Two lights, four cables, and a lot of prayers induced the flash to FINALLY fire.

I met Renee when I still worked at MAC, and we hit it off so well that she liked me enough to take us with her and Nik on their wedding adventure. By the time their wedding rolled around in the middle of the week, we were so attached to them that I had a hard time shooting through my tears of joy, although as Penny can attest, I cry easily at weddings. Not in a creepy way, I swear.

In short, we love them. They have become the newest addition to our Settlers of Catan nerd circle and I can't see them being allowed to leave.

Jess and Eli

I (Aspen) met Jessa and Eli the night I quit my full time job to pursue photography full time. Maybe it was the beer or perhaps the blissful excitement that drew them to us, but in any case, I think Penny and I loved them from the first day we ate pizza side by side at a Whyte avenue pub. There was so much to see the day of their wedding, and I wish we had ten more hours that day to double what we got because they are so photogenic and happy. Enjoy! We surely did!

We give Jessa's mum the award for most beautiful mother of 2010! Although, the rest of our lovely mum's tie for second... amazing women who carry themselves wonderfully on a busy exciting day.

Oh natural light... I wish this wasn't so blown out, but oh well.

This was just a quick shot Penny took while everyone was getting into the limo but it just seems to say "I'm getting married!". We really like it.

Eli had custom converse shoes made for all the guys. Awesome!!

Men have it pretty easy on their wedding day. It takes them about 10 minutes to get dressed and then the rest of the time is just for hanging out and (if they are at Penny's mercy) running around Fort Edmonton Park taking pictures! No the "Penny Arcade" in the background was not on purpose, it just happened to be there.

Penny thought it would be funny to do an old west shootout. As this was not the first time we wished we had antique pistols in the car I think I'm going to find some and leave them there just in case.

This photo on the left was spontaneous and it might be my favorite.

We had to pull the limo over on some country road so Jess and Eli could have photos taken next to these very cool looking mail boxes!

I have a guilty pleasure in Jane Austen movies and stories, and this series of images makes me think Jessa is Elizabeth Bennett in Pride and Prejudice.

Sheldon, Lisa and Jacob

We photographed Sheldon and Lisa a couple times over the years. It is so lovely to watch a couple grow into a family and be there to photograph it along the way. We always enjoy Lisa and Sheldon's company and Jake has always been one of those great babies that let never complains and smiles on command!

Humane Society

So obviously the winter months are a little quieter which is nice sometimes because it gives Penny and I a chance to catch our breaths and try new things. One of those new things is a volunteer stint at the Edmonton Humane Society photographing the new arrivals. Talk about a sucker. My first shift was scheduled for Friday and in an ironic twist of fate I had to put down the 17 year old family dog the night before. I haven't cried that hard in a long time.

All of these animals have a story, and a personality. They all need a home and someone to love them.

I already want at least three cats and for sure one dog, which is a problem since I ALREADY have four cats and one husband. Here are some of my favorites. There are some cats that are not photogenic but have amazing personalities. If you're looking to adopt one, let me know and I will share with you my favorites. <3

This guy above is named Oboe and he's all by himself in a big room. Visit him, he's lonely.

I don't know this lady's name, but she has 6 toes, a pushed in face and is SUPER RIDICULOUSLY CUTE. If you don't take her, I might. And Rob will hate you for not taking her before I do.

This little one must be blind in one eye, but you can carry her around like a baby all day. Super cuddly and sweet. <3

Parlour Magazine Summer shoot.....

This shoot was magical for me on a bunch of different levels because A: Penny was away so I had to shoot it alone ( terrifying when I found out I had an entourage of 10 people relying on my expertise) and I rocked it. Also B: because everyone involved was amazing, the clothes were amazing and the light by far was the MOST amazing. Also, a storm almost cut short our shoot but we waited it out and it was worth it. Here are the shots!

Renee and Nik

Here are some pics from our engagement shoot with Renee and Nik. Aspen and I (along with my Mother) will be heading to Jamaica in February to shoot their wedding, just ask us how excited we are..........very excited.

Aspen has a thing with doors. She always wants to take photos of them or in front of them. I don't really understand it but since she's amazing and clever I indulge her. While chatting between ourselves trying to decide what to do with said door we looked over to see that Nik had wedged himself in the doorframe. Problem solved!

While editing, I came across this photo that Aspen had taken. I liked it so much I sent her a message that said "Sometimes you take a photo and it makes me remember why I fell in love with you (professionally)". Yes. I like it that much.

Rachelle and Mike

Rachelle and Mike had an intimate and beautiful wedding on a warm, sunny day in October. The vintage details, sunny weather and Rachelle and Mike's very open and sweet expressions made this day such a pleasure for us. Did I mention the reception was at the Red Ox Inn? I feel like we would have worked simply for the meal (note the chocolate cake photo at the bottom). Loved it all and love their photos even more!

Boys don't like hairspray

This shot was taken when the door opened and the girls saw Rachelle for the first time. I adore how excited and happy they all look.

Every time I look at these photos I think "Awwww. She LOVES him!" which sounds a bit corny but I like it anyway.

Aspen and I sometimes have competitions to see who can take the most creative ring shot. Usually Aspen wins because she is an artist and (I think) sees the world very differently from the rest of us. Lately though I've been holding my own, the photo on the left is mine and Aspen's is on the right. We're not sure who won but we like them both!

Mike, normally quiet and reserved, led his new wife to the dance floor and proceeded to sing to her while they danced. This was one of my favorite moments.

Previously mentioned chocolate cake. It was amazing.

Parlour shoot!

When Parlour approached Penny and I to do a shoot for them we jumped on board. We always will, partially because it's always a blast, and also because when else do you get 10 people styling some glamazon while you shutter away? It's amazing and thrilling... and terrifying when your business partner is out of town and you do it on your own. But I did it, and it was liberating. Partially because I rely heavily on Penny for direction sometimes even though I can take great pictures. I just like it when someone says I'm doing it right. Make sense? Anyway, working with the lovely Chelsea we accomplished some crazy things despite a massive thunderstorm and finicky lights on someone's property without permission. Here is my pride and joy. I promise to always remain humble and stand back in awe of the beauty around me. Especially when I'm directing. Thank you to an AMAZING team. Love ya.

Salome and Andrew Wedding

Here are some photos from Salome and Andrew's July wedding (yes we are a bit behind on our blogging!). There was such energy and emotion all day and we felt very lucky to have been a part of it!

Salome had the BEST bridesmaid crew. They massaged, fanned, pampered and fed her which meant she was super relaxed and happy by the time they were done.

While waiting for the family to arrive we took some photos of this little guy. Cute!

We were impressed by Andrew's ability to hold the tee in his mouth for so long while trying not to laugh!

The speeches were incredibly touching and emotional, most of the guests were in tears by the end.

One of the many things that always impresses me about Aspen is her ability to catch moments that most people don't see. The above photos are a great example of this as well as the photo below (when she showed me I laughed so hard I almost cried).

Salome and Andrew hired a live drumming band to start their reception. There were so many people dancing that when I was on the floor below you could almost feel the floor shaking!

Salome and Andrew

Aspen and I usually have really good luck with the weather (knock on wood) but we had to reschedule this shoot twice! Salome wanted some shots with blue sky and yellow canola and Mother Nature was not having it. Our first shoot was hampered by a crazy thunder and lighting storm, the second time it rained and we even managed to get sprinkled on for this, our third, attempt! Luckily Salome and Andrew are the lovely, laid back that don't mind shrugging off a little rain (and maybe a spider or two) in order to get a great photo!

Tania and Shawn Engagement!

I feel honored to have Tania Gonzales as a friend. Not only is she radiantly beautiful inside and out, she lets me take her picture whenever I want. When Tania met Shawn I instantly knew he was different from the rest. Not only is he a rancher, who's family has a strong connection to the land he works, but he is kind, and sweet and a perfect character foil to my ultimately city-chick friend. It was hilarious to see a girl who wouldn't be out of place in a Sex and the City movie because of how much she loves good shoes and great clothes tromping around in a field swarmed with mosquitos patiently allowing me to get my shot. Petting a horse she's not too sure about, and letting her son wade in a puddle only because she loves me that much. I can't wait for their wedding, so here's a few shots to tide us all over until then.

I double checked everything on my list of equipment before I made the four hour drive to the ranch... I pulled it all out amidst the swarms of mosquitos and set it all up... and then realized I had forgotten one half of my transmitter. OOPS. So all of these are natural light, except the ones below, where I got creative and used the headlights from Shawn's truck to get my shot. I really like them, mostly because the memory of the trip resides in these the most for me.

I'm in love with this horse already. his name is Coors ( Shawn you should be embarrassed about that, btw) he comes when you call his name, and he seems pretty much the happiest horse ever.

We stripped him after the puddle incident because he reeked, and I got this shot in the garden, which I love because he's only quiet when he's getting into trouble... but it's beautiful nonetheless.

Kristin and Curtis' Wedding

I don't think I've ever cried joyfully so much in my life. I'm actually kind of embarrassed at how emotional I was during my best friend's wedding. it's a double curse/blessing when your friends ask you to shoot for them. Any photographer will tell you how much work goes into a wedding, and that you're so busy working you never have time to just chill. But then, when someone you love is in love it's a once in a lifetime chance to capture those moments, and it means twice as much. it wasn't easy to shoot my friend's wedding, but I wouldn't have changed it for the world. Although if Penny wasn't there doing the majority of the work while I cried between shots, I don't know if the pictures would've turned out as well as they did....

When my best friend told me she was engaged I finally realized what the fuss was about. Our friendship has a long span, we actually met at a wedding about thirteen years ago. Over the years we've been close and not so close, but we bonded again when she was my support in a silk dress as I walked down the aisle last year. I whole-heartedly rejoiced at the chance to shoot for them and even though they were shy, their love for one another radiates when you're in their presence. Here's some of my favorites from their engagement shoot.

I'm guilty of a lot of things in these photos.... soft focus, blur effects, lens flare... sunsets....reflections...cross processing.... wow even I'm ashamed of myself, but they look so pretty!

Bon Jovi for Metro Edmonton

I ran into my friend Tony while shooting Bon Jovi who gave me floor seats. I was front row centre when I had to leave to go shoot Bon Jovi. Afterwards I learned there was nowhere to file my shots so I had to book it home to edit and send my files before 10pm. I left the concert at 9:55pm... talk about pressure! They were a few minutes late, but they made it in. After the stress of such a deadline, I didn't feel like going back so I drank a cold one on my patio with a neighbor, talking about music of the past and how he used to be in a band. All in all, a magical night.

Rich and Linda's Wedding!

Rich and Linda found us through our good friends Dan and Mandy, and we instantly fell in love with their warm hearts and goofy expressions. I learned really quickly that Linda makes a cute, funny face which is then followed by a relaxed, genuinely happy smile. It gave me tons of great shots and many laughs when the girls were getting ready. My husband summed them up when he said Rich's smile made him want to be his friend. It didn't even feel like fifteen hours when we wrapped up the evening dancing our way into some great shots, because you have to move on the dance floor, even if you're the photographer. Here's a couple from the hundreds of gooders.

What do guys do before their wedding? They play streetfighter! And then they put on their suits and play some more!

Penny thought this would be funny. I think it was.

I had to hunt down the priest after the ceremony to borrow this book for this shot. I had to go around to the back of the sanctuary and knock on giant wooden doors into the private quarters.... very scary. He was super nice though.

I love the smiles and the cuddles in this family!

These guys were up for anything, jumping off hills, running in 3 inch heels. Awesome.

Penny set up this great series of shots on the hill and I snapped a couple candids since it looked like the guys were doing the shooting... so sweet

I love her cute expression in this one.

The guys made Rich shoot a mock rap video rewriting the words to "Gangster's Paradise" while walking through WEM with an 80's boom box on his shoulder. I almost died laughing!!

As soon as the music started everyone hit the dance floor and stayed there! We had smiles plastered to our faces the whole night, between the dance offs, random break dancing and limbo contests, we were constantly entertained by these hilarious guests!

Had to take advantage of a beautiful sunset. It was a lovely way to end a spectacular day!!

Broc and Gina's Wedding

The first time I met Broc he scaled a punching bag attached to sixteen foot rafters, monkey-climbed across them to a climbing rope also hanging from the ceiling and shimmied down the rope, all in about one minute. Needless to say he made a first impression. Especially since this was their living room.
Gina and Broc met on the beaches of Honduras and it was love at first.... float? There's a backstory to that you should ask them about if you ever get the chance. Gina and my husband are fast friends and I was delighted to be able to shoot for them on their not so traditional wedding day. A backyard wedding with a pirate theme... might be one of my favorites. Here's some shots from the day!

The shot above is hands down my favorite shot of the year. I don't even quite know why, except I love the sweetness of the kiss, and how the sword is framed by the stars on the back wall. It's messy and in-the-moment and I just love it.

Her dad was especially dapper in his leather pirate get-up.

Right at this moment Gina's Grandma from Italy is serenading them with Danny Boy and she's in her late eighties. Very talented and charismatic Grandma. My favorite memory is catching her drinking with a group of pirates...

Alysha and Ryan

I met Alysha working for an optometrist years ago where we bonded over frame adjustments and a mutual love for coffee. So when she called me to tell me she was getting married and she wanted us to shoot for her I jumped at the opportunity to be part of a friend's special day. I've never before shot a Ukrainian Orthodox wedding before and it was really interesting to see some of the more traditional aspects of the ceremony. ( I liked the crowns the best). After the ceremony we drove to one of the first Ukrainian Orthodox decorative churches in Alberta in the middle of nowhere for some spectacular shots.

The reception that followed was really memorable with lots of emotion from all family and friends, and there was a lot of POLKA!! Yay polka! All in all, a lovely day with lovely friends.... here are some of our favs!
